The holidays are at the corner. Everyone will watch some movies at home. For the best picture and sound, go for DVD of course. But which DVD player to buy? Here I'll make your choice easy: go to your local Walmart and grab a GE1101P for $119.
What else do you want? If no, go get it before Walmart replaces GE1101P with GE1101PA. With the latter, you cannot easily hack the region and macrovision control. If you like a three-disc one, then go get the GE5803P ($159) which is identical to GE1101P but takes three discs at once. If you don't need all the above features and want to pay even less, check other Apex players at Walmart.
Here is the link that tells you how to make the GE1101P and other DVD players region and macrovision free.
Once you've disabled the region and macrovision control, you can flash the original firmware back, if you like, and what's disabled will be still disabled.
The bottom line: while DVD players are now around $100, free of region and macrovision and do everything, I cannot see why you don't get one for your holidays?
[07/29/02] As this player plays MP3 disks and has an optical output, you can record digitally (yes, you heard it right, digitally) MP3 CDs to MD disks! You can record directly VCD soundtracks to MD disks too. However, you cannot record directly DVD soundtracks this way, because MD does not understand the AC3 encoding used by DVD sound.
