After trying most of my opamps that are currently compatible with my v6, I decided to try one of my old favorites, the AD744 (OB).
Once again, I find myself impressed with the clean, natural sound of this opamp. Despite higher noise ratings than many of the other popular opamps, this really sounds nice with all of my headphones. Bass is clean and deep, impressive imaging, and detailed highs.
The sound of this opamp still seems to me to present one of the most realistic soundstages I have heard. I am not able to detect any extraneous noise. I guess the specs do not always tell the entire story.
I am now using the AD744 with the Hi-C 1x BUF634. Given the somewhat limited number of opamps that we can use with the existing assortment of adapters, the 744 is worth a listen.
I am awaiting the adapter details necessary for the use of the LT1028, as that is my opamp of choice in my v.3 I found that it was unstable and prone to oscillation in the v.6. Dr Xin indicated that there will be an adapter for this along with some of the other opamps that cannot be used directly in the v.6.

| Hi Ron, thanks for sharing your findings. I also have AD744 and would give it a trial later. Just wonder if you compared AD744 OB to AD829 OB? I am using AD829 OB and have to admitt that it sounds damn good. Very neutral without any coloration, though I might prefer a bit of pleasing coloration like SA5534 OBCA. |

No, I have not yet compared 744 to 829, but I have made up a set of 829's in the OB sockets, and will install them sometime today for a listen. How did you configure the CA socket for OP275? From the basing diagram, our regular sockets for CA will not work, as only one set of inputs is biased.

| OP275 is a dual op and needs only one socket for the CA tweak. Soldering one 2.2K resistor between pin 1 and 8 and the other 2.2k between 7 and 8. |

I have spent some time comparing the AD744 and the AD829 OB in my v6. The 829 is the winner for detail, clarity, and overall smoothness. As good as anything I have yet heard in the v.6. It does not sound as heavy as it did in my v.3.
I will probably use this opamp as my default until I get the adapters to try the LT1028. They sound great in my v3, but oscillate and sound harsh in my v.6
The AD829 CA will be a tough one to beat, though.

Despite how good the AD829 OB sounds in the v.6, the default AD8397 still has the best sound overall, IMHO. Smooth, detailed accurate. Almost subsonic bass without being overblown. It seems like bypassing the buffer stage adds considerably to the openness and realism of the sound. After all, it is several hundred fewer transistors, resistors, and caps that the signal needs to pass thru enroute to your ears!
