**Update *Edit-Wrong Portege batttery Model BINGO! http://www.geocities.jp/masaya_kobayashi_7/batt.html
This Confirms that I can indeed use the Portege PA3038U-1BRL Battery in my Libreto-or any Libretto L1, L2, L3, or L5 for that matter. It looks like that person sawed off the ends that were made for the Portege to make it blend in with the Libretto. In fact, the PA3038U-1BRL has 3000 mAh as opposed to the standard battery which has 1900mAh. However, as you can see in the pictures at the site above, the battery does stick out somewhat, but hey, that's something I wouldn't mind at all. Awesome. Buying the portege battery fpr $60 sure beats buying a replacement Libretto battery for $100+ especially when you get much better battery life.
Xin, you may want to pin this thread for others seeking help with the Japanese Libretto L series notebooks-just a thought.
and just something else I found in my research- The Concept Libretto(Looks like a super110CT to me)??? Check it out :P http://www.libretters.net/libretto/ff/ |

***Update
It looks like most of the basic parts (Battery, Keyboard) from the Portege 3000 Series are compatable with the Libreto L Series. Interesting.
The battery stuff in my previous posts show the same battery, and below some stuff on the keyboard.
Here if you enlarge the picture for the Japanese/US keyboard layout comparison http://www.dynamism.com/libretto/gallery.shtml
Then you will see here that Dynamism's "US Libretto Keyboard" is the same exact keyboard shown here for the keyboard for the Portege 3000 series (Keyboard P000265440). http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31568&item=3478207073&rd=1
Here's a site in Japanese that shows how to fold the ribbon on the US keyboard to make it fit the Libretto. (again, Altavista BabelFish Translator for english) http://www.ab.cyberhome.ne.jp/~masaya/key.htm
I hope my contributions will help anyone with a Libreto L1, L2, L2 or L5 needing a US keyboard or a new battery. Too bad they never released these in the US because it is a great little notebook. Also, i found some useful info about booting with the L5 since it doesn't have a bios-which is odd. Anyway, the site is a how-to on how to install linux on the L5. For boot info scroll down you'll see it. http://memebeam.org/toys/ToshibaLibretto

I had a Libretto L1 a couple of years back and got it from Japan with what they called the Mid capacity battery which was in fact a portege battery. But it didn't have the wings and they definately weren't chopped off. I guess there was a version of the portege battery that came without the extra plastic bits on the sides.

Update: Got it. This is the battery that i used to have: PABAL001-3100mAh. It's for the dynabook range (toshiba in Japan). It is the same connectors but without out the plastic wings and also has 3100 mAH. I used this battery for about 6 months with both a L! and later a L3 Libretto.

Has anyone actually bought and used one of these portege batteries to use with their Librettos? I just bought an L2 that needs a battery and since the portege batteries are so significantly cheaper, I'd love to use that instead, if it does in fact work. And if sawing off the ""wings'' doesn't render the whole thing useless.
Also, onarahosting I'm having trouble finding your suggestion for the PABAL001 battery. Sounds like that might be the better solution, but I can't find one. Where did you find it?
Thanks,
Keith. |

As for a cd-rom drive you can actually use any pcmcia drive with the correct drivers, but you cannot use it as a boot device. When you need to install a different version of windows or linux just partition your harddrive and load it into the second partion and then boot from that.
As for the us layout keyboard I found out that all keyboards from the portege 3400 series are compatible with the libretto L1, 2,3 and 5. I use the 2004p12 without any probs, so it seems that the hardware used for the portege is the same configuration as for the libretto, this also answers the question for compatible hardware as cd drives etc. |
