This booster (the left picture) allows you to use extra 3 AAA batteries to double the power output of Xin Super Mini Amp that has a booster connector.  See the right picture for how to use it.  With the doubled voltage (from 4.5V up to 9V), the amp drives hi-impedance headphones with more headroom and produces a better overall sound.  Batteries not included.

You don't have to use this booster and you can simply use an 9V battery. You can also use an AC adapter or car adapter to boost or power the amp.  However, with this booster, you can use all AAA batteries.  Why use 6 AAA batteries instead of a single 9V?  Because, AAA batteries are far more economic than 9V batteries.  AAA lasts about 5 times longer than 9V.  Six AAA batteries cost about $5.63 and five 9V cost $17.50, so you save $11.87 each time.  Furthermore, you replace batteries 5 times less frequently.  If you use rechargeable batteries, however, we recommend you to use a 9V rechargeable as a booster because charging 6 AAA batteries are not fun.

Warning: The digital pot cannot stand more than 7.2V.  Therefore, if you want to use 9V battery externally, you can only use 7.2V rechargeable ones and you cannot use any internal batteries at the same time.  For the same reason,  don't use 6 alkaline batteries (1.5V), i.e. always use at least three rechargeable batteries (1.2V).  Amps with analog pots do not have these concerns as analog pots can stand with much higher voltage (up to 13.5V).  The thumb of rule: digital pot cannot stand more than 7.2V total (internal + external) and analog pot can go up to 13.5V.
