You need this IDE converter if you want to mount your laptop hard drive into a desktop. Laptop drives have different interface and cannot connect to a normal IDE cable used by desktop PCs. With this converter, your laptop drives become normal IDE drives and can be used in any desktop PCs. For example, when you upgrade your laptop hard drive, you can use this converter to copy installation files from your desktop to the new drive. Afterward, you can use this converter to use your old drive in any desktop PCs. With two of these converters and PowerQuest Drive Image Pro, you can copy directly from your old drive to the new one. The picture below shows how to use this converter. Note: connect the cable and hard drive exactly the way as shown, or you may destroy the converter, the hard drive and/or your PC. On the cable side, the red line of the 40-pin ribbon cable is always the first pin and should match the first pin of the converter. On the hard drive side, the first pin of the drive connector is always close to the 4 jumper pins (for master and slave selection) and should match the first pin of the converter. If you use the hard drive as a slave, you can use a thin wire as a jumper if you cannot find such a small jumper. Check your hard drive's manufacturer for which pins to jump. Usually jump the two pins close to the connector for Toshiba drives and the other two for other drives.
